'sad'urday

i clicked on this blog this morning and decided that ripp's gruesome thumb has been up top way too long. for me anyway, and i knew this days ago, but just couldn't muster the energy.

then i realized that although this blog was started with the intention of documenting the snippets of our children's lives worth remembering, i haven't talked about them much lately.

so today, it is all about the pill. who told me this morning that he only likes nicknames that rhyme with his name. bill. the pill. the thrill. will bill the pill. and maybe the snail. oh wait...that doesn't rhyme. giggle giggle.

he is...how should i say this...well i'll just say it...IN LOVE WITH HIS MAMACITA!!! freud was right when he penned the oedipus complex and my son is living proof. the skull and crossbones t-shirt was a result of an afternoon when the pill just want to love on me. he wanted to snuggle, read, play games and make something. according to him i always make stuff for his sister, but not him and he didn't want a skirt or bow. something cool and boyish. the result was this shirt that he tries to wear every day and all night. next up, one with a knight shield and swords.

the pill wakes up every morning with hair looking like he spun circles on his head all night. i spend time each morning spraying, slicking, gelling, slicking and spraying so that he doesn't look like he crawled out from under a rock. ripp on the other hand, lays a hot, wet washcloth on his head and walks away. he emerges from under the cloth with perfectly, style-able hair. i can imagine ripp when he was little, sitting on the counter while his dad shaved, talking boy talk or talking life.

somethings are genetic (crazy hair) and some things are learned (trips to tame crazy hair), but i love the small, daily lessons learned from a generation before me. and...the more i watch ripp parent a boy, the more love i have for my father-in-law and the things he taught his own children. because he turned out great, ripp is turning out great and it gives me hope that the pill will turn out great too. and always worship his mamacita. (just kidding, andi)

which brings us to 'sad'urday. is it called that because that is the day we are all supposed to be sad? oh no, i say as i am lacing up cleats. it is called that because moms and dads get to say that they sat at soccer games all morning, and wonder why their child who normally runs everywhere and does tricks in his sleep, can be so slow, mellow and distracted(that's normal) on the soccer field. ripp woke up one 'sad'urday and commented that they skies are clear, it is going to be a terrible day for soccer. but great if you prefer to watch your shadow on the field. in a rare moment of clarity and skill, he did emerge from a bunch, dribble to the goal and score. it was awesome!

ripp missed it. he too was distracted, watching his own shadow.
