out of the mouth of the pill
if library books are any indication, the pill is destined for a future in zoology, vet care or dinosaur studies. there has yet to be an creature too small, too big, too creepy or too extinct. venus fly traps? check. megladons? check. baby cheetahs? check. you name it, it has come home in his backpack.
as i was tucking him into bed a couple weeks ago, amazed that the boy stink of summer had been washed away, replaced with the sweet smell of soap and lotion, i talked to him about what he wanted to be when he grew up and what i thought he would be great at. he is tough, fearless, can eat earthworms when needed, and extremely compassionate. he is a reactor whose spectrum of emotions is vast and intense. he is still learning to stop and think things through before acting. he has a conscience. he tests my patience and sometimes the limits of my love for him. he has never gone to bed angry with me. and...he is hilarious.
all of these qualities suit him for a life insides the books he is drawn to. as i told him all this and about vets and zoologists, he paused and responded, "so i shouldn't rap with sister then?"
giggles. good night.
